Men maakt onderscheidt tussen zelfvertrouwen (“the perceived ability to accomplish a certain level of performance”) en self-efficacy (“a performer’s belief that he or she can execute a behavior required to produce a certain outcome successfully”) en onderzocht alleen de eerste.

State versus Trait
Self-confidence is both a personality trait (i.e., “a relatively stable predisposition” and a psychological state (i.e., “a transitory emotional condition”. This means that some athletes, by nature, will tend to be more confident than others. However, even the most naturally confident athlete may experience low self-confidence in specific circumstances (e.g., following an unexpected defeat) or unfamiliar territory (e.g., the football quarterback on the 10 m diving board). Our review is specific to studies that evaluated the relationship between state self-confidence and sport performance and excludes investigations of trait self-confidence traits.

Bij welk type sport is zelfvertrouwen belangrijker?
“our results showed a stronger relationship between confidence and performance in short duration sports compared to longer duration sports and individual sports compared to team sports.

Leeftijd?
Nearly all samples were younger adults, with mean age exceeding 30 in only three studies. With aging and gathering experiences, athletes might accrue greater knowledge of task demands and therefore provide more accurate confidence estimates. We suggest that future research should investigate the confidence–performance relationship in targeted populations, such as all-female and master athletes.

Reactie van onderzoekers op mijn vragen

Hi Erik,

I hope all is well in your world. Here are my responses. Thanks for asking.

1. Yes, it is a small effect. If you only need a small effect to do your job, then great. Small effects are not insignificant. They are just small effects.

2. Yes, you can perform well without lots of confidence. Why? The other team or opponent might just play poorly that day. Things happen. However, I would not shout that from a rooftop. The point is confidence might not help as much as hoped. If I have zero confidence as a soldier, then no one wants that soldier as a partner. Zero confidence in your area equals dire consequences.

3. I am writing a self-efficacy meta-analysis right now. As the two concepts are different, my team and I decided to separate them. At the moment, I wish I did not as I am writing the same methods section again.
